Just recently, Bollywood actor Rajat Rawail was hospitalised after he lost a lot of blood due to a varicose vein rupture.

Earlier in late 2020, actress Tapsee Pannu had taken to social media, sharing a picture of herself and remembering the time when she got her varicose veins operated and removed weeks before starting her training.

"When I see this picture I remember how I got my varicose veins operated and removed just 6 weeks before I started training. Now those scars can act as an evil eye," she had said.

Similarly, several Hollywood celebrities like Britney Spears, Kristen Davis, Serena Williams and Emma Thompson have come to the fore and shared their experience with varicose veins.

Those of you who're wondering what varicose veins are and whether it has any life-threatening consequences, here's all you need to know about it.

Also known as varicosities, varicose veins are characterized by enlarged, twisted veins overfilled with blood. They are usually swollen in appearance and are bluish-purple or red in colour.

Varicose veins occur because of the improper functioning of the veins. Given that veins have only one-way valves that avoid backward flow of the blood, poor vein functions damage these valves and blood begins to collect in one place, hence enlarging the veins.

This type of condition is most prevalent in women. Experts believe about 50% of the women population and 25% of all adults suffer from varicose veins. These mostly appear on the lower legs, since standing and walking raises the pressure in the veins of the lower body.

Varicose veins can cause slight discomfort and can be unappealing to look at. But it isn't dangerous or life-threatening in most cases. However, venous diseases like varicose veins and chronic venous insufficiency can lead to complications in very rare cases. These include:

- Vein rupture leading to blood loss

Some research also indicates an increased risk of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism due to varicose veins.

Some of the common symptoms of varicose veins include:

- Misshapen veins that appear enlarged and twisted

- Bluish-purple veins appearing on the skin

- Heavy feeling in the legs

- Swelling in the lower legs

- Change in skin colour around the varicose veins.

If you notice any of the symptoms mentioned above, visit a doctor and get a proper diagnosis.

The doctor will examine your legs and look for signs associated with varicose veins. You may also have to undergo an ultrasound to keep a tab of the blood flow in the veins.

Your doctor may also recommend a venogram to further assess the veins, wherein he/she will inject a special dye into your legs and then take X-rays of the same. These tests also help in detecting blood clots, blockages and swelling in the body.

There are a wide range of treatment options for varicose veins. It could either help prevent the formation of varicose veins or avoid worsening of the symptoms. Some of the treatments include:

Self care is key - Maintaining healthy weight, performing exercises that improve blood circulation and refraining from standing for long hours can help prevent varicose veins.

Compression stockings - Compression socks or stockings help put enough pressure on the legs so as to facilitate easy flow of the blood and decrease swelling.

Surgery - If lifestyle changes and other options fail, surgery can be the next step to removing varicose veins. If your varicose veins have turned painful, your doctor may recommend vein ligation and stripping, which is a surgical procedure. Other treatments include sclerotherapy, laser procedure, catheter-based procedures using radiofrequency and ambulatory phlebectomy (fluh-BEK-tuh-me).
