Pope Francis said on Wednesday that he felt the pain of survivors of Canada's residential school system like "slaps" and that the Catholic Church has to face up to its responsibility for institutions that abused children and tried to erase Indigenous cultures.
There are at least two millionaires in Toronto who don't know it yet. The Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation (OLG) says no one has claimed a $55 million Lotto Max prize, adding the ticket was sold somewhere in Toronto. The jackpot winning ticket was drawn on Friday, with no claimants. Another ticket, drawn June 28, with a jackpot prize of $70 million has also not been claimed, OLG says. That ticket was also sold in Toronto. Claimants have one year from the draw date to claim their prize. Pla

Onlookers shouted for the aggressor to stop but didn't come to Ogor

Tenants of a North York apartment building are calling on their landlord to rescind all temporary eviction notices issued to people who live on the first floor. The notices, known as N13 forms, have been issued to about a dozen tenants of 1570 Lawrence Ave. W., a six-storey building with 87 units. The evictions will allow workers to complete major renovations while the tenants are out of their units. HAPPY CAMP, Calif. — A wildfire burning in a remote area just south of the Oregon border appears to have caused the deaths of tens of thousands of Klamath River fish, the Karuk Tribe said Saturday. The tribe said in a statement that the dead fish of all species were found Friday near Happy Camp, California, along the main stem of the Klamath River. Tribal fisheries biologists believe a flash flood caused by heavy rains over the burn area caused a massive debris flow that entered the river at or

Police encountered the man when they arrived on scene, but the "rapidly changing dynamics" of the situation led to an officer firing their gun, police said.
WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden and the first lady are expected to join Gov. Andy Beshear and his wife, Britainy, as they meet with families and view damage from storms that have created the worst flooding in Kentucky's history. At least 37 people have died since last month's deluge, which dropped 8 to 10 1/2 inches of rain in only 48 hours. The National Weather Service said Sunday that flooding remains a threat, warning of more thunderstorms through Thursday. Monday's visit will be Biden'
The rapid growth of a long-burning forest fire in central Newfoundland has triggered a state of emergency in the area and the expansion of an outdoor fire ban to the entire province. Premier Andrew Furey told reporters on Sunday the state of emergency was declared the night before in the areas of Grand Falls-Windsor, Bishop’s Falls and the Connaigre Peninsula, "not to create panic" but to ensure residents and officials alike are ready to respond if the situation deteriorates further. KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — Four more ships carrying agricultural cargo held up by the war in Ukraine received authorization Sunday to leave the country’s Black Sea coast as analysts warned that Russia was moving troops and equipment in the direction of the southern port cities to stave off a Ukrainian counteroffensive. Penguins are usually found in the southern hemisphere, living among the ice on Antarctica. But Galapagos penguins are a unique species that thrive in the cold water currents around the Galapagos Islands. This adorable little penguin was perched on the rocks, taking a break from fishing. Scuba dive tour guides were brining their group back from an underwater adventure when they saw an opportunity for a close look at the penguin. They brought their inflatable boat close to the rocks and imitated the call of the penguin. Amazingly, the little fellow answered back and even hobbled his way down the rocks to get closer for a chat. The climate in the Galapagos Islands is unique, due to the convergence of three strong ocean currents. The Humboldt Current is a cold ocean current that flows into the area, lowering temperatures, and decreasing the salinity of these waters. It brings sardines, anchovies, and jack mackerels to these islands in great quantities. It is the smaller fish that the penguins feed on, allowing them to thrive in a world where they would not otherwise be able to live. Galapagos penguins are among the smallest species of penguins in the world. They are a delight for tourists and an important part of the ecosystem here. This was a heart warming moment for the divers on this boat who were able to see one of the local animals close up.
MONTREAL — The justice system in Quebec's northern Nunavik region should be better adapted to local culture and have a more permanent presence in the area, according to a new report. "It is of primary importance to recognize that the system, as it currently exists, has fai
At a World War Two memorial event in the Solomons' capital, Honiara, Sherman rebuked governments that she said sought to dismantle the rules-based international order. The Solomons surprised their neighbour Australia, and the United States, this year by striking a security pact with China. "President Biden has made solidarity with the Pacific Islands a priority for his entire administration from the very beginning," Sherman said at the event, also attended by top diplomats from Australia and New Zealand.
