The Boston Red Sox could be gearing up to trade All-Star shortstop Xander Bogaerts.AP
It’s about to happen again. The Boston Red Sox are well on their way to trading the face of their franchise.
Red Sox chief baseball officer Chaim Bloom traded Mookie Betts to the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2020 when it become obvious the right fielder wouldn’t re-sign with Boston.
The same thing could happen to shortstop Xander Bogaerts.

The two-time World Series champion can opt out of his six-year, $120 million contract after the season. He, like New York Yankees right fielder Aaron Judge, shut down talks about a new deal before Opening Day.
But unlike Judge, Bogaerts never received a legit contract offer from Boston. Now, with the slumping Red Sox in last place in the American League East, MLB insiders believe Bogaerts could be packing his bags before the Aug. 2 trade deadline.
MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand “polled two dozen front-office executives on a number of topics, including the biggest name they think will be moved prior to this year’s Trade Deadline, and Bogaerts was one of the most popular picks.”
MLB.com’s Jon Morosi tweeted this week “A Xander Bogaerts trade to the #STLCards could be realistic this summer if the #RedSox continue to struggle.”
The Athletic’s Jim Bowden pitched a Red Sox-Cardinals Bogaerts deal as one of five trade he’d like to see this month.
Should the Red Sox trade Bogaerts, a four-time Silver Slugger Award winner and three-time All-Star, Boston could have his replacement already on the roster in the form of Trevor Story, who signed a six-year, $140 million contract this winter.
